My story

Sierra Becca Handmade has been a long time passion project of mine, and I am so excited to finally be able to share my makes, patterns, and knowledge with the world, and the making community!

My name is Sierra, and I am a Registered Nurse by day, and a maker by night; quite literally. Some of my favorite time spent crafting, writing, and designing are in the quiet, wee hours of the night. I began knitting when I was in the 4th grade. After school one evening, I walked to our local library as they were having a class on knitting, and I thought that sounded interesting. That day I fell in love with knitting. My mother picked me up from the class, and I went home and found some old scratchy craft yarn and two pencils, and I knit and re knit that length of horribly scratchy yarn until it was flawless (as flawless as a 4th grader’s scratchy yarn square can be). The next time we went to the supermarket, my mom let me pick out my very own pair of knitting needles and yarn! Soon after that initial class, I also broke my leg. What a convenient time to learn a sitting hobby? The rest? It’s history!

Sometime after I had been knitting for a while, I decided I wanted to make my very own quilt. I had no lessons in sewing, had never even touched a sewing machine. But if other people could do it, why couldn’t I? My parents both held a deep appreciation for handcrafted goods, especially quilts, even though no one in our family quilted. So I decided my very first quilt was going to be a king sized quilt for my parents. Ambitious. I rode my bike into town, and buy one yard at a time of mis-matched fabric from our little Dueber’s, (kind of like a Ben Franklin store) because that is all I could afford as a tween (good fabric is expensive, sheesh). Each yard I cut into little 5” squares. Piece by piece I put that quilt together. For Christmas that year, my mom and dad bought me my very own sewing machine, and I taught myself to sew. In college, I decided to branch out from quilting and began sewing bags and apparel.

My next venture is in pattern drafting! I finally have the ability to get all of my knitwear ideas and designs out on paper and in beautiful PDF formats for other makers to create! Check them out under the “For Makers” tab!

This site is the place where I get to share my art, my makes, and hope that others get just as much enjoyment as I do out of my creative habits. So, stay a while, take a look around, and let me know what you think!
